Rolex is a luxury household name. It is a prestigious watchmaker with a longstanding and reputable history of creating timeless classic watches the world over. Despite producing more than a million timepieces every year, Rolex still commands maximum value and respect in the watch (and wider) industry. Owners sell their pre-loved and often unworn watches daily via various means and methods. Quite staggeringly, Paul Newman’s Exotic Rolex Daytona 6329 was sold at a New York auction for a record-breaking $17.75 million in October 2017. Despite originating in 1905 at the hands of Hans Wilsdorf, its popularity, reputation, and value have increased exponentially over the last hundred years, and the demand shows no sign of slowing down.
So, if you think you are ready to sell your Rolex, we have put together a comprehensive ‘sell my Rolex in the UK’ guide. Sometimes you may not have all of the information you need to sell. Here are some common problems and solutions.
I want to sell my watch, but I am not sure of the reference number or serial number. What do I do?
There are several ways you can find the reference number of your Rolex. Firstly, if you have the accompanying paperwork, i.e. the warranty card, receipt, or service records, the reference number should be recorded there.
If, however, you do not have the accompanying paperwork, you will have to look at the watch itself. Where the reference number is found could vary depending on the watch. The Oysterquartz model, for example, is the only Rolex to have the number engraved on the back of the watch.
On all other models, the reference number is typically hidden from view. To find the reference number, you will have to remove the bracelet on the 12 o’clock side to see the reference number engraved in the case. The number is in between the watch lugs hidden behind where the bracelet meets the case. If you are concerned about doing this, there are many YouTube tutorials you can follow. Alternatively, bring it to our London store, and we can do this for you.
As with the reference number, the serial number can be found on the original paperwork should you have it. If you don’t, then once again, you will have to look at your watch to find it.
The serial number is found on the opposite side of the reference number on the watch case. As before, you will have to remove the bracelet from the watch case but draw your attention to the 6 o’clock side, where you should find the serial number engraved on the case. Again this is something we can help you with, should you need it.
Can I sell my Rolex without papers in the UK?
Undoubtedly having all of the original paperwork will help to sell your Rolex and increase its value. However, selling your Rolex without papers it possible. As a professional service, we will still be able to authenticate your watch without the original paperwork. We understand the movements and parts that make up a Rolex and have the knowledge and experience needed to determine the authenticity and subsequent value of your watch.
