Rolex GMT-Master II 'Sprite' 126720VTNR Review

Rolex GMT-Master II 'Sprite' 126720VTNR Review

The new Rolex GMT-Master II Sprite 126720VTNR was part of the Rolex 2022 aviation themed release schedule. Showcased alongside the updated Rolex Airking, the GMT was undoubtedly the main feature of this year’s offerings. The new green & black bezel, or Verte / Noir if you prefer (VTNR) would be quite a simple change to make within the current GMT-Master II collection and would surely receive the usual aplomb, but no, this GMT is significantly different from anything we’ve seen before, and maybe opens the door to a new era. We’ll explain why, but first let’s review this new offering in isolation.

New Rolex GMT-Master II Sprite Specifications

The technical specifications of the new Rolex GMT-Master II 126710 VTNR are, in the main, the same as any other Oysterseel GMT. We see this watch presented in a 40mm Oystersteel case, powered by the same calibre 3285 Rolex movement providing a 70hr power reserve and a precision rating of +/- 2 seconds per day.  The case provides a water resistance rating of 100m and has the option of being mounted on a Jubilee or an Oyster bracelet, which in turn benefits from the innovation of a folding Oysterlink clasp with the easylink 5mm extension system.

Rolex GMT-Master II 126720VTNR Pricing

The new Rolex Sprite will carry a 2022 UK retail price of £9,250 for the model presented on an Oyster bracelet, and similarly the UK retail price of the Jubilee bracelet version will be £9,400. As a stainless steel watch newly released in the Rolex Professional range this watch will be made available by Rolex Authorised Dealers to a chosen few in line with their own allocation policies, which, in the main means this watch will not be generally available to most at the Rolex Sprite 2022 UK retail price. UK preowned secondary market prices will no doubt be significantly over retail price, and can be expected to be in excess of prices currently being sought for other stainless steel options from the Rolex GMT-Master II collection. Our best guess is that initial UK prices will be seen somewhere in the region of £22 - £25,000. Current Rolex Sprite UK prices when available can be seen here for the Oyster and for the Jubilee bracelet models.

Rolex GMT-Master II Sprite Differentiation

Once we look past the delights of a new colour combination to devour, we can see that this is no ordinary GMT. With the date window appearing adjacent to the screw down triplock winding crown in the 9 o’clock position this will be the watch that many have been waiting for and create a conundrum for the rest of us. What we see is what is known as a ‘destro’ watch, a watch made for the left hander, to be worn on their non dominant side upon the right wrist. So if you are left handed, perfect, Rolex have finally catered for your watch wearing needs after decades of overlooking this significant proportion of the worlds population. If you’re a right hander, then, if this is the watch of choice for you, then you’re faced with the same dilemma that our southpaw buddies have had to overcome for every other watch in the Rolex catalogue.

So the GMT-Master II ‘Sprite’ will now ask the question of many of us, ‘how do you wear yours?’ Personally, as a particular fan of the GMT, and having owned more watches from this, than any other Rolex collection I’m feeling aggrieved! I love the bold green look within the bezel but try as I might, I just can’t make this work for me. Wearing a watch on my right wrist feels akin to wearing my shoes on the wrong feet, totally alien and will constantly get bashed against doors and furniture with my right wrist seemingly suffering from a lack of spatial awareness. Wearing this watch on my left just doesn’t look right aesthetically to me, and the crown also feels uncomfortable on that side. Maybe I’ll just have to wait and hope that this bezel becomes available as an option for us right-handed watch wearers.

The recent expansion of the Rolex GMT-Master II offering does raise some questions in relation to the future strategy for this collection. Is the ‘Sprite’ a one-off option for a left hander or have Rolex opened the door to reviewing a new range of possibilities being facilitated and prototyped through the GMT-Master II. What we could be seeing here is the move to a ‘mass customisation’ model, where Rolex have in their estate, all the modules to create any combination of GMT desired by the customer. It could be that we’ve already seen a move towards this with the ‘Configurator’ facilitating a walk through the potential options on rolex.com, and Rolex seem to have taken it a step further with their sister brand. Could the ability to build a Tudor Pelagos in a left or right-handed configuration be a trial forerunning the ability to configure a Rolex GMT-Master II to whichever configuration you require? ‘So, you’re looking for a blue & red bezel, certainly sir. On a left handed case? No problem, which bracelet would you like that presented on?’

For now, though we have no choice but to be content in what we have. It’s with one eye on future possibilities we step into ownership of the new Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Sprite’ as at this point, we can only wonder about what will come next.
