The Rolex Datejust 41 Collection - An in depth review

The Rolex Datejust 41 has been presented to us as the latest child of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust collection, the longest standing collection in the current Rolex catalogue. Since its introduction in 1945 the Datejust has withstood all manor of fashions & styles, and it remains as relevant now as it did then. Becoming such an iconic classic through several generations cannot be achieved without some degree of change, and in recent years we’ve seen Rolex evolve the Datejust to take account of modern watch trends, initially by introducing a 41mm Datejust under the guise of the Rolex Datejust II. The lifespan of the Datejust II was fairly short lived in comparison to most Rolex collections, and in 2016 we saw the Datejust evolution continue. The name ‘Datejust II’ was misleading in the sense that it insinuates that this new model is a replacement for all previous Datejusts, when in fact the real intention is for it to sit beside other models in the Datejust collection. The new Datejust 41  is much more appropriately named, and sees this new, larger model sit alongside the Rolex Datejust 36, as well as the Rolex Lady Datejust 31 and the Lady Datejust 28 within the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust collection.

Rolex Datejust 41 Review

Rolex Datejust 41 Overview

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41, now carries a name that describes fully the functions provided by this specific model and distinguishes itself within the wider Datejust collection. ‘Oyster’ refers to the waterproof casing, as it was the original Oyster Perpetual that was the first waterproof watch to be developed by Rolex, with the word ‘Perpetual’ given to describe the automatic winding of the movement. Datejust refers to the simplicity of having just the time, and the cyclops lens magnifying the date displayed through the aperture at the 3 o’clock position on the dial, and of course '41' refers to the size of the case in millimeters.

The Rolex Datejust 41 also see’s a few adaptations from the previous 41mm Datejust II. In terms of appearance, the watch has been refined somewhat to make it more proportionally balanced. Generally the watch is thinner, with the baton hour markers, the bezel, lugs and case all now being slimmed down making the dial itself slightly bigger. The Rolex Datejust 41 also benefits from the new series of Rolex movements, which, through a number of efficiencies in design, now facilitates an improved 70hr power reserve whereas the Datejust II was only capable of holding charge for up to 48hrs.

Rolex Datejust 41 Current Range

Over the last couple of years Rolex have extended the range available within the Datejust 41 collection and we are at a point now where we could be correct to assume that the stable is complete. Popular additions to the collection, not seen before on the Datejust II, have been the option for a jubilee bracelet, and an introduction of a range of steel & everose gold models. We’ve also seen arguably the most popular dial, the slate grey / green Roman (or Federer as it’s lovingly known) extended across all models, whereas previously it was only available in steel & yellow gold, with a fluted bezel on an Oyster bracelet. A number of other dials have also been introduced to the range.

The 126300 model, entry level Datejust 41 is the only full stainless steel model. The lack of precious metals or diamonds within this part of the portfolio makes the smooth bezel Oystersteel option more affordable and a great option as a first Rolex or a smart but inexpensive dresswatch.

The 126334 model Rolex Datejust 41 is formed predominantly in stainless steel, although the watch is enhanced with an 18ct white gold fluted bezel framing the dial. To align with the addition of precious metals there are also an extended number of dial options including a mother of pearl dial, and diamond hour markers.

Moving on to the bimetal options starting with the introduction of yellow gold. The smooth bezel model 126303 again comes with the option of Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, with a range of dials to complement the addition of 18ct yellow gold. This smooth bezel steel & yellow gold combination is the least expensive Datejust 41 with a two tone bracelet.

Probably the most popular of the Rolex Datejust 41 bi-metal options is the Oystersteel & Yellow gold, with the addition of a more decorative fluted 18ct gold bezel framing the dial. The range of dialson this 126333 model are the same as for the smooth bezel version, and the fluted bezel increases the price across the range by £50.

Previously the Rolex Datejust II offered no option for Everose gold of any sort, and it’s here on the Datejust 41 126301 that the Oystersteel & Everose gold combination makes its debut. Again both the smooth bezel and fluted bezel have the same range of dial options and both are available with the choice of Oyster or Jubilee bracelet.

The most expensive combination in the Datejust 41 collection is to be found within the 126331 model section. A fluted Everose gold bezel, as well as diamonds and mother of pearl dial options all enhance both the look and the price tag at the top end of the Datejust 41 collection.

Future Rolex Datejust 41 Additions

Initially, the options for a 41mm Datejust were fairly limited within the Datejust II collection, but since the introduction of the new Rolex Datejust 41 we’ve been given a much fuller range to choose from. The introduction of the Jubilee bracelet and Oystersteel & Everose options have filled some obvious gaps in the collection, and a much wider configuration of options exists. Future additions to the collection are possible by introducing a new range of dials, or by creating some full gold pieces. Although possible, we’re not expecting to see further additions to the collection in the short term. The Datejust 41 now sits comfortably within the wider Datejust collection taking its place as a classically styled dresswatch, but in a more appropriate size for gents considering modern watch trends.
