A relatively new brand, founded in 1999, Richard Mille is a Swiss luxury watch company, based in Les Breuleux in the Canton of Jura, Switzerland. Named after its creator, the company is known for a spirit of perfection and technical excellence, as well as a pioneering style and contemporary design of timepieces.
The company’s founder Richard Mille himself was born on the 13th of February, 1951, and started his work at a local watchmaking company in 1974. This company was bought by Matra in 1981, and Mille himself was able to transcend to the company’s watchmaking business. As the company’s watchmaking activities were moved on to Seiko, Mille left Matra, to start a watchmaking brand for Maubossin, a French jewellery firm. From here, Mille decided to go his own way once again, and founded his eponymous company alongside Audemars Piguet in 1991, with the first watch released in this name – the RM001 going on sale in 2001.
These numeric model names are common in Richard Mille models, with the company’s most distinguished pieces including the Tourbillon RM 008, and the sapphire split seconds RM 056. One of the brand’s – and indeed the World’s – most advanced watches is the RM 008, which combines a tourbillion movement with a manual winding, chronograph split seconds, a power reserve indicator and a torque indicator.
Richard Mille’s watches are created with three core areas of focus in mind. First of all, they strive to be the very best in technical perfection. Secondly, they look for the best in artistry and architecture, and third, they focus on being the very best in embodying the heritage and culture of fine watchmaking and hand finishing.
One of the most distinctive features of Richard Mille’s watches is the lack of expense spared in the timeless pursuit of perfection. The company’s RM 056 is fully see-through, with a case build entirely from sapphire. This watch was distinct from any ever created, and was awarded the best watch of 2012 at Mexico City’s Salon International de Alta Relojeria watchmaker’s exhibition.
Sponsoring everyone from Brazilian F1 driver Felipe Massa, to Golfer Bubba Watson and former World Number 1 tennis player Raphael Nadal, Richard Mille is one of the 21st century’s most notable watch brands. The company has also adorned the wrists of celebrities including Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan and Natalie Portman, cementing its position as a World leader.
If technical complexity, prestige and modernity are what you’re looking for from your next luxury timepiece, Richard Mille’s unique collection makes a fantastic place to browse.
