The rumour runs and runs, and with Baselworld 2020 cancelled does the Hulk have a stay of execution? At Global Watch Shop, we understand from various sources at Rolex that the Rolex Submariner Hulk is discontinued, and production of this model has been ceased. This means that only stock already produced and either held within the Rolex Authorised Dealer Network or ready for distribution into the network is going to be made available for sale. Once that stock is exhausted, the Rolex Submariner Hulk as we know it will no longer be available as a new watch.

UPDATED 5th August 2020 - Rolex Submariner Hulk Discontinued

Further to the previous information received that the Rolex Submariner Hulk 116610LV was being discontinued we are able to provide an update in line with the announcement of Rolex new releases 2020 in September. Sources on the waiting list who are due to receive the Rolex Submariner 116610LN imminently have been told that their allocation has been delayed until September. This delay is due to the discontinuation of the 116610LN Rolex Submariner, and they will instead receive a new Rolex Submariner with an updated movement. This all but confirms the release of a new Rolex Submariner 126610LN with a the new Calibre 3235 movement providing improved accuracy and power reserve. At this stage it is not clear what, if any other changes will be made to the Rolex Submariner collection, but provides the clearest indication yet that this is the end of the Rolex Submariner collection 11661x series and an updated range of Submariner models can be expected in September 2020.

When Will the Rolex Submariner Hulk be Discontinued?

Our understanding is that the Rolex Submariner Hulk was due to be discontinued at Baselworld 2020, but with the cancellation of this years show, and Rolex officially delaying all new launches indefinitely the Hulk's potential discontinuation has been delayed. Since this announcement Rolex have withdrawn from the Baselworld show permanently and are due to showcase their new wares at a new show in in collaboration with the FHH (Fondation de la Haute Horologerie) in April 2021 in parallel to Watches & Wonders. We expect that the Rolex Submariner 116610LV ‘Hulk’ will be withdrawn from the Rolex catalogue at this time.

What evidence is there that the Rolex Submariner Hulk will be discontinued?

Usually, discontinuation of Rolex models remains a closely guarded secret at the brand, with no official press release about models or collections that are taken out of production. The first official sign is usually withdrawal from, or replacement in the Rolex catalogue. Whilst removing a model from production takes some preparation, a delay to the news becoming public due to the cancelled Baselworld show means that some of these preparations may have been leaked. We have information from three separate sources that the Rolex Submariner ‘Hulk’ 116610LV is no longer in production. The first two are both Authorised Dealers, one in the UK and one in Europe. Whilst it has been known for AD’s to spread these rumours based on guesswork rather than information and use it as a sales technique the position of our third source has nothing to gain from accelerating purchasing decisions. Our third source sits within the Rolex production facility in Switzerland, and, we are led to believe from them that production of the Rolex Submariner Hulk has been discontinued ahead of the new round of Rolex Submariners being released.

Why will the Rolex Submariner Hulk be discontinued?

In recent years Rolex have been rolling out there newest, most efficient movement across the current catalogue. This has seen previous models of the Datejust, GMT-Master II and Yacht-Master discontinued to allow for the upgrade movement to be included in a new version. With the Submariner and the Daytona being the two main collections yet to be upgraded it’s reasonable to assume that the Submariner be released first as the Daytona, being a Chronograph, requiring a more complicated movement to be developed.

Are all Rolex Submariners Being Discontinued?

As we’ve seen with previous collections that have been upgraded to benefit from the new movement, ultimately, the entire collection will be discontinued and either like for like replacements will be released as we’ve seen in the Yacht-Master collection, or this could give rise to a whole range of updated models, as with the GMT-Master II.

Will there be a replacement Rolex Submariner Hulk?

A this stage it’s unknown whether there will be a new generation Rolex Submariner Hulk 126610LV with an upgraded calibre 3235 movement, or if this signals the end of the Hulk as we know it. The third possibility could be a new design altogether. Our favorites would be a modern Kermit with green ceramic bezel and black dial akin to the 50th Anniversary Submariner discontinued in 2010, or alternatively an all blue steel Submariner, although this would like to prove detrimental to sales of the white gold all blue model.

Is the Rolex Submariner Hulk a good investment?

A question we are asked all the time! The potential for discontinuation always brings speculation of future prices. The highest increases in prices for the current Submariner Hulk are likely to be seen if there is no new direct replacement, however with no downturn in the demand for steel Rolex sportswatches, and no signs of an increase in production numbers from Rolex, it is likely that the discontinuation of the Rolex Submariner Hulk will only cause an appreciation in existing prices.
